Hi Leigh Ann,

Right on!

There are other businesses that seem to be on the fast track in terms of building their lists and growing their businesses. But what's interesting about most of them is this: their businesses never really develop momentum. If they stop hustling customers stop coming in and the business dies.

A friend once used the analogy of watching a duck on a pond. They look like they're skimming effortlessly on top but underneath they're paddling like mad. Having those close relationships create a sense of ease and spaciousness that never comes if you're constantly "on the make."

Excellent article. You have hit the nail on the head! I own a small newspaper ad placement agency and have been in business for over a decade. I have struggled through the years to build business online as there are agencies that have better traffic than we do and they seem to get the new business at a quicker rate.

The one thing that they do not do is retain the business at the level that we do. What do we do different? We build personal relationships with our clients. Not to win them over for business reasons, though that is a good side effect! I do this because that is they way I am. I am genuinely concerned and interested in the success of our clients. When you truly care about your customers, they know it and will reward you for it by giving you their business.

I have worked with many salespeople through the years and those that were the most successful had one thing in common. They all took time to get to know and take a personal interest in their clients.
